Importing of Cosmetic products

I would like to know if anybody can tell me if there are specific rules and regulations with regards to importing of cosmetic products (soap, face wash, body cream, etc)?
Does the product has to be registered in South Africa and does it need the approval of Department of Health?
According to Customs and Excise it can be imported as long as you have an importers code...
I would appreciate clarity with regards to legalities on this.

We gave a similar response to one reader. You need to contact the relevant government body. The International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) as informed by the International Trade Administration Commission Act (Act 71 of 2003) uses a permit system to allow the import and export of goods in and out of South Africa.

Importation of sensitive goods are highly regulated to protect the consumers, the industry and to ensure the alignment with the environmental requirements and SA’s international agreements.
